As part of the 60th anniversary of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), some selected Senior High Schools took part in a Quiz competition. To inspire the students, the winning schools were presented with prizes consisting of scientific instruments for laboratories at the CSIR-Food Research Institute. Present at the event were the Chairman of the 60th Anniversary celebration, Dr George O. Essegbey and the Director of CSIR-Food Research Institute, Prof. Mary Obodia. The Chairman of the Anniversary competition and the Director of Food Research Institute both encouraged students to take up science education more seriously because science and technology are the key drivers of development. According to the Chairman of the Anniversary, ‘a nation that aims high should be serious about science and technology to get to a point where super power countries cannot stop their agenda.

On the 26th of March 2019, A delegation from the world financial body, World Bank visited the Food Research Institute’s Agri-Business Division in Pokuase. The delegation of the World Bank paid a courtesy call to make inquiries on the state of the Ethanol and Glucose plant housed in Pokuase. Also in attendance were the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, Engineers from FARA and the WAAP secretariat.

Food Research Institute led by the director of the institute, the deputy director, project administrator, and the accountant led the representatives to tour the plant to see the progress made so far. The teams present were taken through the processes and stages of production and shown the stage at which the plant operated and its level of completion.
At the meeting held at the conference room, the delegation from the World Bank remarked about the excellent strides being made and promised to do all in their power to ensure the release of funds for the completion of the plant to ensure optimum productivity.
The Chief Programs Officer of the WAAP and the Minister of Food and Agriculture also pledged funds to aid in the completion of the ethanol and glucose project.

The C:AVA exit forum was held at the Director’s Conference room on Thursday, March 14, 2019. In attendance were about 60 people from various institutes of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research. The various institutions present were the Ministry of Agriculture, FAO and MOFA- Eastern and Greater Accra representatives. All institutions and Institutes were well represented to grace the C: AVA exit forum.
During the programme various presentations were made by the various institutions. Various speakers spoke on the Cassava: Adding Value project. Each elaborating their specialty into the broad topic. Present was the Deputy Director General of CSIR, Prof. Paul Pinnock Bosu, the MOFA director and C: AVA country manager, Dr. Nanam Dziedzoave.

At the programme held at the Food Research Institute, various groups of people ranging from farmers and processors to stakeholders and service providers were present at the Forum making it a rambling success. Also, Research Scientists from the Crops Research and FRI were in attendance. After a brief but well-attended Forum, it all came to an end with short speeches from dignitaries present. Pictures were also taken of the participants to immortalize the event. Therefore bringing the C: AVA forum to an end.

Nineteen members of staff, including top management and security staff, were talked through the need of Quality Assurance in the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), by Prof. J. O. Fening, a former Director of the CSIR-Soil Research Institute. As a council that serves the Ghanaian populace in various capacities, the CSIR organised Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC) talks in all its 13 institute to ensure its products and services meet consumer expectations.
Being in the business for some years now, FRI was said to be ’spot’ on for practising the principles of QA/QC in its day to day activities. However, FRI would not be left out in the CSIR QA activities to ensure uniformity in all aspects of the council’s QA/QC monitoring activities and to improve co-operate CSIR.
To meet the demands and expectations of the public CSIR will practice QA in all facets of the council: from Administration to security services. The council believes that QA systems should be well Instituted, to ensure that it serves the public well and for the public to get to know more about CSIR.
CSIR will therefore improve on standards in all its activities thereby making standardisation and quality a continuous activity through the provision of evidence. Thus, competitive advantage will be the hallmark of QA/QC in CSIR.
The world is changing at a fast rate and so to avoid stagnation, CSIR is moving along with the innovative world by creating an office to deal with all QA/QC issues in the council. With its head office established in Kumasi, two staff will be drawn from each of the 13 institutes, for further training to achieve QA/QC in the whole of CSIR. More engagements will be done to improve on quality to meet ISO standards.
Among the many activities to be undertaken will include monitoring project proposals and projects, appraising and monitoring institutes scholarly publications and evaluating customer satisfaction of the product and services of the council.
